All About Title IX

The Title IX office is dedicated to ensuring gender equity at the University of Virginia, which includes coordinating the University's efforts to prevent and effectively respond to all forms of sex discrimination (including gender identity and sexual orientation discrimination) and sexual misconduct impacting community members, including sexual assault, sexual exploitation, sexual harassment, dating and domestic violence, and stalking.

This work is done in compliance with applicable law, including Title IX, the Clery Act, and the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2021, all of which are coordinated by the Title IX Coordinator.

The Title IX office also maintains the University’s comprehensive program designed to prevent sexual misconduct and remediate the effects of sexual misconduct on victims and the greater UVA community.

 

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

What is Title IX?

Title IX does not apply only to sports; it does not apply only to women. It applies to all of us at the University of Virginia: students, faculty, and staff. The goal of Title IX is to eliminate sexual and gender-based discrimination in our educational settings, addressing ten key areas:

  • Access to higher education
  • Athletics
  • Career education
  • Education for pregnant and parenting students
  • Employment
  • Learning environment
  • Math and science
  • Standardized testing
  • Technology
  • Sexual harassment (which includes gender-based harassment and sexual violence, such as sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking)

This final area, sexual harassment, is what this website is focusing on in particular, though at UVA, all forms of sexual and gender-based discrimination are antithetical to our community's values and expectations.

 

We use a few umbrella terms when we talk about these matters: 

 

Sexual discrimination

The language of Title IX that refers to all of the above behaviors that occur in the context of an educational program or activity. 

 

Prohibited conduct 

How our Sexual Misconduct Policy refers to the above behaviors when they are committed by students against any person, whether the conduct occurs on-Grounds or off-Grounds. 

 

Sexual violence

Usually refers to the behaviors of sexual assault, stalking, and relationship violence.
